Facebook Business Page “Our Story”

The Our Story section is located prominently on the right side of your Facebook Business Page (when viewing on desktop), or under the Home and About tabs when viewing on mobile. In late September 2018, Facebook also added this section to the center feed of your Facebook Page. However, this addition was temporary.

The Our Story section added to Facebook Business Pages allows Page Owners the opportunity to share another photo plus a more personal, and long form glimpse into their business. Think of your Our Story section as the Facebook version of your website’s About page. Before you’ve set up your Story, Facebook auto-inserts an image that has been previously uploaded to your Page plus the beginning of the text included in your About or Long Description area as a placeholder.

NOTE: In a Social Media Today blog post published on January 15, 2021, we learned that Business Pages are beginning to be notified that the Our Story section as we know it, is going away. The information included in the Our Story is being relocated to a different area of your Page (and the name “Our Story” seems like it will no longer be used).

NOTE #2: In late January 2021, Facebook began notifying Page Owners that their Our Story would be going away as of February 28, 2021. Facebook recommended copying the current text included your Our Story section, over to the Additional Information field located in the About section of the Facebook Page. This field is text-only, with no image or clickable links available like there were in the Our Story section.

Facebook Story Default

If you’ve ever used Facebook Notes, the Our Story edit view will look very familiar to you. In this view, you can select a new photo to upload, give your “Our Story” a new title, and add/edit new text.

Post updated Summer 2018: The original recommended dimensions for a Facebook Note cover image were 1200 x 445 pixels. However, more recently Page Admins who were either creating their Story for the first time, or swapping out the cover photo for a new one, noticed that Facebook has begun left-justifying the placement of the cover photo when it’s viewed from your Page (before you click to read the Story in full). If you’ve had your image uploaded for some time and it’s always looked centered when viewing your Our Story section without clicking on it, you’ll be all set until you swap out your current image for a new one. For those who need to work with this updated left-justified placement, we recommend trying to crop the left and right sides of the photo you want to use (this has been successful for multiple folks we’ve helped). A reader who had luck cropping the left and right sides of her image suggested trying the size of: 880 x 445.

Edit your Facebook Story

As you start adding or editing text, you’ll see that you have some basic word processing features like H1, H2, bullets, quote block, HTML editing, and adding an image or link.

When you have it looking how you want, click the blue Publish button at the bottom right corner.

Completed Facebook Story

Once you’ve published your Facebook Story, you’ll see that the new Our Story section replaces the text that used to be in the Long Description area of your Business Page. Other sections such as About and Company Overview remain the same.

You can edit your Story or change the image at any time.

If you’ve already written about your business’ story on your website or blog, you might find it easiest to copy and paste some of the text you already have on your website, into this section.

Facebook Our Story Moves Center Stage

In late September 2018, Facebook made a change that places your Our Story in the center column of your Facebook Page in addition to positioning it on the right (on desktop). This was a helpful change for Page owners who wanted their Facebook Story more easily seen and in a more prominent position. However, this addition didn’t last long. By late 2018, the Our Story section was no longer appearing at the top your Page’s post feed.

Facebook Story Center Page

At this time, you cannot add back your Story to this center column placement. I attempted to modify my Page template to see if you can adjust where or if this appears in the center of your Page, but even with changing the order of your tabs, this was not available.

May 2019 Facebook Story Header Image Issue

In early May 2019, there were several reports of Facebook users being unable to see any new header image that was added to their Story. Facebook still allowed users to upload a new image to the header section of the Story, but once saved, the Story showed only their Story text and not the header image. Facebook Pages with an existing header image still showed the header image; this problem was limited to people changing their header image or adding an image for the first time.

On May 14, 2019, users began reporting that their header image was working again. This seems to have been some type of temporary glitch with Facebook.

Facebook Users can Share your Page Story to their Stories

On May 21, 2019, Facebook began notifying Page admins that users are now able to share the Page’s Our Story, to their own Stories. This sharing capability can be disabled by Page admins.

Facebook Getting Rid of Our Story with its New Layout?

Facebook slowly started rolling out a new look and layout to its Business Pages in early 2020. As someone who was offered – and accepted – this new look in February 2020, I have watched as things have changed (and sometimes changed back), features come and go, and new adaptations we’ll all have to make once the new layout is permanent, like changes to the ideal size of a cover photo among other things.

As more time went by and more users started receiving the new Facebook look, I began to get more and more questions about where the Our Story section disappeared to. As of late summer 2020, it’s a mix of people who can still get to their Story section but can’t edit it and others who can’t find it on their Page at all. At this time, Facebook hasn’t officially announced anything about the Our Story section, so there’s no way to know (yet) for sure if it’s going to go away entirely, or if it’s just been lost in the Facebook Page renovations that continue to take place.

Update October 3, 2020: When viewing my Business Page at https://business.facebook.com/EliRoseSocialMedia/, the Our Story section has returned, can be clicked on, and can be edited and republished. I recommend you try doing this while replacing your Business Page’s username with mine. Perhaps this means once Facebook completes its rollout of the new Business Page look, we’ll have this feature back and for good.

I have a business page as well, and I have filled out a brief description in my Story section, but there is no option to further edit it like you have described. My business page is rather new and has minimal likes, so I wonder if there’s a minimum of followers you need to have this option?

Hi Amanda! Once you click to publish your story, you should be able to click on it when viewing it from your FB Page on desktop, and it brings up your Story with an Edit button in the top right corner. If you aren’t seeing that option, it’s likely a short-term glitch.

      Hi Diana,

It sounds like the image is very large/the incorrect size. I’ve run into this, too, when trying to use an image that I thought went well for the Our Story page. Try resizing or cropping to: 1200 x 445 pixels

      Reply
      • Diana

The sizing is still off. Any idea how much smaller it would have to be for the entire image to show? It shows about 3/4 of it now.

        Thank you so much!

          Hi KW,

When you say it’s only showing 3/4 of the image, is that from your FB Page view or after clicking on the Our Story and enlarging it as if you were going to read it? The “crop” of the image before it’s clicked on is different than what’s fully shown after clicking on the Our Story to read it.

Hello, I’m facing the same problem. In my more recent facebook business page, the story and the above location section, appears. I can edit my story, but I cannot put photos in there.
In another facebook business page that I have created since 10 months now, the location section does not appear. And also in the story section I can not put photos. I am trying to find out how to deal with this problem, but haven’t found anything.

    • The E R Team

Hi Enxhi! So, you can click to edit, and the story enlarges on your screen, and what do you see where the cover image is supposed to be? Is there a default image there that you can’t change? Is there a grey icon with the words “Upload image” that shows?

For your second Page, what type of Page is it? Is there not currently an address in the Page but you want to add one?

      Reply
      • Enxhi Dyrmishi

In my first account, when I click “story” is an edit button, that does not show a larger window, neither an upload image button.
In my second account, I have managed to set there 3 locations, that show up only on the location button, not on the about button. Also in here the story setting does not have an upload image button.

      Hi Kim,

It could be happening if the photo is either too small or too big. Maybe try adjusting the time size or even try with a different image of a different size just to see if you can get that to upload. Also, have you tried in a different browser? Sometimes that does the trick. Hopefully it’s a temporary issue for you.

I have used the recommended size 1200 x 445px for the cover photo but the thumbnail on the right side of the business page shows it croppped. Ideally, it should resize the image. Why is this happening?

    Reply
    • The E R Team

Hi Vartika! More recently, Facebook has begun left-justifying the cover photo when it’s viewed on the right side of the business page (before clicking on it to read it in full). This was not originally the case. What I’ve found other readers have had luck with is cropping off the left and right side of the image you want to use as that seems to help center the image. A new recommended size is about 880 x 445. Thanks!

    Reply
    • The E R Team

      Hi Anne-Kit,

No, you cannot pin your Our Story. On desktop, it is located at the top of the Page but on the right. On mobile, just about everything except recent Page posts are accessed through a tab/button. If you wanted to keep that image and text on your Page’s feed, you could copy/paste it to a Page post, publish it and then pin that.

No, I haven’t seen a way to do it. I tried sharing the link to the About tab, but that just shares the Page and shows the FB cover photo, and not your Story. Are you certain it’s their Story they are linking to? I’m wondering if perhaps they copied and pasted the content from their Story as Note, which can be shared, instead of sharing a link to their Story.

Is there a way to remove “Our Story” from the center column? We’d like our pinned post to be at the top of the page, but the “Our Story” section automatically takes precedence. Since “Our Story” is already in the right column, we really don’t need it in the center column as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! At this time, there is not. I’ve tested changing the Page template, since that’s where you can customize (somewhat) the tabs/features you have active on your Page. However, you cannot hide it or rearrange it. Facebook will let you drag and drop the About tab to a different place in the order when modifying your Page template, but it still shows in the same spot when you view your Page.

        Hi Pamela,

I just visited your Facebook Page and what I saw was the top photo and the title but no text in the body of the Story. If you click to edit your Story on desktop, what happens?

    Hi Max,

You’re the second person I’ve heard from recently who has experienced this. So far, all of my Pages still have their Story, but all my Pages are US-based. The other commenter who has lost their Story section is in the UK. So, I’m not sure if there are some things FB is tinkering with in other countries.

The Facebook Business Page seems to have changed in 2019. The text is taken from the About section and the photo/graphic is no longer changeable. At least that’s what I’ve run into recently. I need to change the graphic because it has a person’s name on it that is no longer associated with our page. I can not find the edit button ANYWHERE. All info about Our Story is from 2018. Some thing has changed. Any help or ideas?

      Hi Karen,

If you visit your Story section by first clicking on your About tab (on desktop), can you get to it that way? And then click on your Story to enlarge it on your screen?

    Good Day,

I wonder if you are able to assist me. I recently created two business facebook pages and on both pages the story option is greyed out. I can see the option but I am unable to do anything with it on either of the pages. I invited someone else as an admin on both of the pages and they are able to edit the story section. ‘

Do you have any idea why this could be happening? Surely as the creator of the page I should be allowed to edit the same things as an admin.

    Kind regards
    Carmen

      Hi Carmen,

Definitely odd that one admin can edit the Story and another can’t. Are one of you accessing through Business Manager and the other, not? Or one trying on mobile and another on desktop?

Hello I have an interesting situation. I created our story, saved the desired text and uploaded the photo. However, when I click on publish update, only my text appears in our story section on my facebook page. Photos do not show. However, when I press edit, the text with the photo appears. how to fix it?

      Hi Kamile,

This seems to be a new issue as you are the 3rd person in a 2 day span to ask this. I haven’t seen this issue before now. Not sure if it’s a temporary glitch, which FB is famous for, or if it’s some kind of permanent change.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is already solved. I do not know how, but after a few days the photo itself appeared without my action. I hope others will get rid of it.

hi Liz, that was a very helpful article, thank you. I’m in a middle of building my facebook business page. However, for some reason I don’t have the ability to edit my “story” at all. All the other sections are editable, but this one isn’t. Is there any reason to it, which I am not aware of? I created a page in a “services” template… thanks in advance for your advice. Kind regards.

So if you click on your Story on desktop and it enlarges on the screen, do you see any of the admin type buttons? Edit, Save, Publish, etc?

      Reply

It does not enlarge, and there are not edit/save/publish buttons. I heard that there should be a pop-up window, in my case nothing pops up…

I’m having the same problem as a few people here and don’t yet see an answer.

! I’ve tried to upload a photo in the header area in the “Our Story” section on my business page and it will show the photo as a preview in the header area of “Our Story” but as soon as I hit publish, the photo does not show up on the page in the “Our Story” section. I used the suggested dimensions and the photo still does not show up. Do you have and ideas as to why this is happening? https://business.facebook.com/anunstoppablelife/

My Story page, which is not published yet, shows a camera icon in place of each caption I try to paste from Word. I had not had this problem before while working on the page. The only problem I had was the extra space below my captions for a title, which I did not need. Any insight?

      Hi Mary,

It sounds like it’s copying over formatting from Word, into your Story. It’s probably going to be easiest to delete out everything in your Story and manually type it in. There’s a lot of unseen formatting in Word, and I think that’s what’s screwing you up with the copy/paste.

I’ve changed my business page name a few times while working on the page, which isn’t published yet. This last name I’ve chosen isn’t going through, and I’ve entered it several times. It is not against any of the posted rules for naming a page. It has all caps as part of the name, but it is an acronym, which is allowed. Should I just assume that Facebook thinks so, and give up on it? I sent a message for a function not working yesterday and it’s too soon to hear back, if I do. Any experience with this? Thanks.

I hired a SM co to do FB Ads and they added a Our Story to my Facebook Page. I have never liked the copy and keep researching on how to delete it but have not been able to find anything. When I click on the Our Story at the bottom it has my Facebook business logo liking & commenting as at the very bottom.
There is no access to Our Story on the about page.
Can anyone guide me? thank you!

This is not related to Our Story but the name of the Business Page. I’ve been trying to change the name with everything rejected apparently as, after a few days, the same name is there and I am able to submit a change again. I have tried various names with the same result. Now I am getting this message when I submit a change. Your Page name can’t be changed.
You can update your Page category and add other info to describe your Page so it is easier for people to find it. Learn more. I have not published and am not going to publish with the current name. What should I do?

      Hi Mary,

When you say, “after a few days, the same name is there”, do you mean that you seem to be able to submit a name change and it goes through, but then it reverts back to the old name after a few days?

      Reply
      • Mary

When I have submitted a name change, for a few days I cannot submit another 1. When I press edit I get the message that I’ve already submitted 1 and I have to wait. After a few days that message no longer appears, my name hasn’t changed, and I’m able to submit another name. That has changed. Now I get the message name cannot be changed when I click edit. I hope that clarifies it.

How do you hide your business page photos from appearing in your posting thread visible to viewers (View as Page Visitor) — not on my admin page. The posts are interrupted by this sudden explosion of my photos in a block titled Photos–from my profile to my cover picture and all the miscellaneous photos I have here and there. Not the Story cover photo though. I don’t want these to show. Is there any way to keep this from happening? Thanks.

      Hi Mary,

All content posted to a Business Page is public, including photos. So there’s no way to completely hide a previously-posted photo unless you want to delete it off the Page. You can choose to hide a photo post from your timeline, but that doesn’t make it hidden in other places on Facebook. However, if rearranging your Page’s tabs so your Photos were located in a place of less prominence, you can try that. You would do so by visiting your Settings, then Template, and then dragging and dropping the tab order. Good luck!

Is it in another area on the mobile?? thanks so much ! JAckie

Try swapping your Page username where mine is, and see if you can access it that way.

      Hi Jen,

Yes, as the new Page layout has rolled out more and more, it seems like most users can’t locate their Our Story anymore where others can but can’t edit it. It remains to be seen if it will be gone for good or if it just hasn’t found its permanent home yet.

The Facebook Story section is called “Our Story” by default. But if you are referring to Stories like what you have on Instagram, your Facebook Profile, and your Facebook Page, that is something different.
